What’s in Vitamin D?

Rice bran, hypromellose capsule shell, vitamin D 3  (from cholecalciferol).

Is Vitamin D vegan?

No, it is derived from non-slaughtered sheep’s wool.

Is there any published scientific evidence of a benefit for vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a food supplement and it has health claims on the back of label which were approved by the EFSA (Vitamin D 3 supports the normal function of the immune system and the process of cell division. Vitamin D 3 contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscles. Vitamin D 3 is required for normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorous, and normal blood calcium levels).

What is the recommended dose?

1 capsule daily. However you may be advised by a health professional to have more than this just for a short period.

Can vitamin D be taken by people with Diabetes?

Yes it can be taken by those with diabetes.

What is the recommended age for taking Vitamin D?

Vitamin D can be taken at the age of 18 and above.

Does vitamin D have to be taken with food?

Yes, preferably.

Can I take it if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Probably not, unless you are treating a known deficiency. It is best to be advised by your midwife on this.

What are the side effects of Vitamin D?

1 or two capsules a day are unlikely to cause side effects but too much vitamin D can cause loss of appetite, the need to pee a lot, and weight loss. High doses of vitamin D can also make you disoriented and cause kidney and heart problems.

Does vitamin D contain any artificial additives?

No.

What allergens does it contain?

It does not contain any of the 14 allergens which are listed by the EFSA.

Where are the products made?

Are you sure the ingredients are genuine and free from contaminants?

Absolutely – the manufacturers have a long and strong history of quality assurance and compliance with international standards. They also do their own in-house analysis of each ingredient looking for purity and authenticity.

Are the supplements organic?

These are completely natural products but they are not organic.

Should I take Vitamin D at a certain time of day?

No, as long as it’s at mealtimes.

Can I take vitamin D with my usual supplements such as glucosamine, multivitamins and omega 3 etc?

Yes, you can take with some other supplements, but not with other high dose vitamin D containing supplements.

Storage. Do I have to keep Vitamin D in the refrigerator?

Vitamin D should be stored in a cool dry place. Storage in the refrigerator is
acceptable.

Are there any concerns with taking vitamin D while I am on prescription medications?

Vitamin D does not affect medications, but some do effect vitamin D absorption, e.g. Orlistat and bile acid sequestrants such as questran.

Can I take Vitamin D before surgery?

Probably, but always check with your surgeon first.

How long will it take for me to feel the effects of the supplements?

Just as the effects of a healthy diet are long term and are seen over a lifetime, it is difficult to say when you would feel an observable effect from supplements. However, we do know that it is always important to maintain a balanced diet for good health.

Do I have to take Vitamin D every day? Can I take every alternate day?

Yes, but it may be best to take every day to get the desired effect.

If I cannot consume capsules, what are the other alternatives to taking Vitamin D?

You can open the capsule and pour the ingredients into your cold or warm food/drink.

Are the supplements kosher or halal?

Cholecalciferol is vegetarian but does not hold specific kosher or halal certification. The rice bran holds certification for halal and kosher diets. Although the capsules alone are vegan and are suitable, they do not hold a religious certificate.
