Why Take a Multivitamin?

Why Take a Multivitamin?

Multivitamin or multivitamin and mineral supplements are the most commonly consumed food supplements worldwide.

These range between specific needs of population groups eg pregnant women, to specific age groups eg over 60’s

Why Take a Multivitamin?

In an ideal world, we would get the nutrition we need from our diet alone. We would have access to all food groups and know exactly how to prepare each food type to ensure we got the most out of what it could provide. Sadly, this is not the case.

According to a Government Study, only 54.8% of adults aged 16 and over consume 5 or more portions of fruit and veg per day. This study was last updated in November 2020 and this is why taking a multivitamin could be advised.

The main purpose of a multivitamin is to fill in nutritional gaps. Some people’s diets are inadequate because they can’t afford to eat a variety of food, or they don’t like a huge range of foods.

Even some vegetarians lack some vitamins because their diet is carbohydrate heavy and doesn’t contain the essential vitamins from meat or fruit and vegetables.

On the other hand, some people may eat really well but have medical conditions which mean that the absorption of food is really poor. For example people with chronic diarrhoea from pancreatic or intestinal diseases, or scenarios where parts of digestive organs have been removed.

In these situations taking a multivitamin could provide a real benefit.

And, even if you do eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, there is still a chance your body isn’t getting its NRV of all the vitamins it requires. So, taking a multivitamin could be beneficial to anyone.

Can Taking a Multivitamin Replace a Healthy Diet?

A multivitamin provides only a hint of the vast array of healthful nutrients and chemicals naturally found in food. It cannot offer fibre or the social and mental enjoyment of foods which are so key to a balanced diet.

Multivitamins can however play an important role when nutritional requirements are not met through diet alone.

Some multivitamins contain more than 100% of the recommended daily amount for some vitamins, although without testing your blood levels you would not know whether you need more than a normal dose. If you do have specific deficiencies a multivitamin is not recommended, you only need to top up vitamins which are low.
